I recently had the privilege of interviewing a dear friend, mentor and my coach, Susan Hyatt. She is a master certified life and business coach who specializes in helping women just like me get more of whatever they want, whether it be more money, more pleasure, more passion or more time to pursue meaningful goals.

We spoke about being a successful woman in business and WOW I learned a lot! One key point we spoke on, the mind. On average we make around 35,000 decisions a day and have anywhere from 50,000 – 70,000 thoughts a day. With these many thoughts and mental activities, we have to mentally be prepared each day. Our minds are BIG & POWERFUL!

Susan said it best, “people get too caught up in making a change, instead of making changes within themselves and then seeing where the dust settles. Figure out your head, figure out what you’re telling yourself.”

In order to be successful and or make that BIG change in life, we must first start with our heads! You have to manage your mindset and create the life you think is beautiful. You can change your hair, you can change where you live, but if you don’t change your mind, nothing is going to change. You’ll see the same thing happening over & over again.

During the interview I asked Susan, “when you work with high achieving women, the women out there that are going for it and working on big goals, the ones that you think there is no doubt in my mind that they are going to achieve this, what are those qualities that you see in them?” She quickly responded, “mindset and that they have learned to see opportunity versus obstacle.”

In order to see opportunity over an obstacle you need to sharpen your mind;

Think positively. You may hear this often but its HUGE! Train your mind to think a positive thought before a negative thought. Instead of saying, “this month sucks, I’m the worst on my team, I’m not good enough” build your thoughts with confidence, “I will be better next month, I will be the best on my team, I will come back stronger.”

Quarterbacks throw bad passes that cost games, you miss president’s club by a couple thousand dollars…does this mean you don’t come back stronger?! NO! In order to win games and hit president’s club next year, you come back with more strength. You reassure yourself daily, by the hour, by the minute that you are strong, smart and set apart.

Write words of affirmation – put them in your car, on your mirror and all around your house. Reminders that you are a badass!

Get rid of the negative people in your life. Unless it’s your dear Aunt Sally or someone on your team. In that case, try not to spend as much time with that person. Instead, surround yourself with people who have similar goals and thoughts. I find negative people bring me down quicker than I can build them up. Negativity in = Negativity out.

Stop complaining. Yeah, you’ve worked 60+ hours, you are behind in sales and lets be real, you haven’t had your hair colored in over six months…maybe it’s not the prettiest season of your life but complaining does nothing for you. It doesn’t help you obtain the goals you’ve set, the six figures you’ve dreamed of or the promotion you’ve strived for. Constant drive, dedication, and strength do.

Complaining wastes your time and burns energy through your heart. A quick fix; think before you speak. Try not to verbalize your complaint! If you really need to get it off your chest; find a close friend who genuinely knows your heart and communicate the issue at hand.

Be grateful for all you have! Even when the process to success is dirty there is always gratitude to be found. A great practice is to physically write down five things you are grateful for each morning. Feed and thrive on them and remind yourself you are fortunate! You are on an incredible journey…

Proud of you,
