Where are my super-women out there? My mamas, business owners, hustlers, high achievers?
My ladies that do it all and more. The house, the kids (the husbands), the pets, the laundry, the nanny, the house cleaner, the businesses. Running our houses and homes like a well-oiled machine.
I used to pride myself on how organized my life was. Literally every piece of mail filed orderly, my inbox neatly labeled and tagged, my house.. immaculate, my dogs perfectly groomed. I did it all!
But as my business grew, I knew I couldn’t do it all alone.
No matter how hard giving up control was, I still hired a cleaner, then a lawn care service, then a part-time assistant. Knowing that me doing all those things myself wasn’t a dollar productive use of my time nor was cleaning my house 5 hours each week going to grow my business to the next level.
And then.. I got pregnant with my daughter Reese.
3 years ago, I gave birth to one of the biggest blessings in my life. I was highly encouraged to take a “real” maternity leave. I fought it HARD!
I was coached and questioned, “How important is this time in your life?” “Will you regret not taking that time to be with your child for business?” Put in that light, the answers were pretty clear. And so after some time, I agreed to a 2-week maternity leave. Then a month, then 2… then 3.
Eventually, I took 3 months out of my business to be with my baby and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Leading up to that time, was HARD.
My business was not in a place to have “the top producer and ring leader of all the things and all the people” OUT for 1 week – let alone 3 months. The beauty of this and the beauty of my sweet girl coming into this world was that I had 9 short months to figure that out (actually more like 6-7 by the time I agreed to it).
I had to get clear on what my business NEEDED to run without me.
I had to build a team.
I had to delegate a lot.
I had to get super clear on my numbers.
I had to ensure that my clients were taken care of.
Systems were in place.
My team was trained, FAST and supported.
Was it perfect? No.
Did everything go without a hitch? NO.
In fact two weeks before I was going out on leave, one of my key support staff submitted notice. BUMMER!
There was so much that I learned during that time. There is so much that my business learned while I was out. All of those hardships, changes, struggle, allowed us to grow tenfold.
My business would not be where it is today if Reese wasn’t in my world. If I hadn’t had to figure it out.
Today, we are preparing for Baby #2 to join us in just 4 short months.
And this time around, I have not just one but three businesses. I have a toddler, four additional animals and will also be going through a massive home renovation.
The role of which I need to step into far exceeds the role I was in 3 years ago. Do you see the beauty of this?
Now I need to go even higher, become even more efficient, become an even better leader, business owner, CEO. I need to be crystal clear on what my people and businesses need not just to survive but to THRIVE without me.
It isn’t just a time for my family to grow and for me to take a little “vacation”. It is a time to lift my people up and watch them shine without me. This is one of the biggest gifts I have received as I have employed, hired and lead people.
What else will this baby teach me? I am not sure but already it has been an incredible gift beyond just the gift of a child.
Maybe you don’t have kids or don’t have a hard deadline like I do but what I challenge you to think about is, if you were to take a month, two or three to live your life work-free or spend time with your family, what would your business need? What systems, processes, and goals need to be set? Who would you have to become?
As entrepreneurs, our biggest goal should be to have our businesses support our lifestyle. Take vacations, take a maternity leave, unwind…but all too often, I see the opposite.
It’s time to run your business like a CEO. You can’t do that alone. It takes a village, a plan, and a hard deadline.
Not sure what that is for you or your business? I would love to dive in with you to get you there.
If I can do it, you can too!
